Seussical Jr.

Book by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Co-Conceived by Eric Idle
Based on the works of Dr. Seuss

One Act, Book Musical, Rated G
Broadway Junior Version

A delight for children to perform, SEUSSICAL is now one of  the most-performed shows in America!  In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFFMY FAVORITE YEARONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big  imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.

How Parts Are Chosen
Casting a production can be a complex and difficult process.  If you audition, hoping to get a specific part, please understand that our goal is two-fold, to give people opportunities to grow in their craft and to present productions of excellence.  Parts are chosen by the audition committee with the director having the final say.  There will be a lot of time and deliberation that goes in to selecting each part (including minor roles).

Factors that influence our decision are:

  1. The audition — Were you prepared?  How well did you do?
  2. Physical characteristics — Do you fit the part?
  3. Matching cast members — We sometimes have to consider size in relationship to a part.  (Example:  If you desire a role of a wife and the actor chosen to play the husband is a foot shorter than you are…)
  4. Behavior – How well did you follow directions?  Were you respectful of others during the audition process?  Supportive of others who were auditioning?
  5. Experience – Depending on the size and scope of the role to the overall production, we may consider your past acting experience. While we are always looking for new and inexperienced actors to fill leading roles, this part of the casting process allows us to place actors in appropriately challenging and fulfilling roles.

Thank you for your understanding!

Parents attending auditions
If it is helpful for the child auditioning, the Vocal and Monologue Audition portions are open to immediate family and friends of the child auditioning.  Parents, family members and friends will be asked to leave the audition room once their child's group has completed their vocal and monologue auditions. Dance auditions and any subsequent callbacks are closed. This will ensure that there are no distractions and the student can fully concentrate on the instructions being given to them by the dance instructor or director.
